Canteen Overview

“Food is our common ground, a universal experience.”

- James Beard, chef and cookbook author

The college canteen is thus, rightly, situated at the heart of the campus. The canteen area can be divided into the following three parts – the foyer, the main canteen area and the Green Shed, which is adjacent to the main canteen. On entering the campus through the main gate, past the reception, the main canteen is situated beyond the basketball court (also called the first quad), after the volleyball court. It is to the left of the common boys’ washrooms behind the volleyball court.

The space in front of the main canteen is the foyer – a seating area having long benches, wooden chairs, and square tables. This is where students flock from time to time, and you will always hear bustling sounds.

The open space to the left of the canteen, close to the woods, is called the green shed. This space has seating areas with long benches and tables arranged in a row. You will also find the water filter and the basin area beyond these seats.

The main canteen area is an indoor structure with different counters. This is where food is ordered and picked up. There are also two rows of long benches and seats that serve as seating area. There are multiple entry points to get to the canteen from three doorways –

Location of counters

On facing the main canteen from the foyer in front of it, you will find the juice counter at a stretch towards the extreme right. On accessing the main canteen area, you will find the sandwich counter to your right and the two rows of long benches and seats to your left. Moving further inwards, the counters after the sandwich counter are the pizzas, burgers and bread, chaat, pasta counters in just that sequence. On turning to the right from here, you will find the bakery (our daily bread) counter and the ice-cream counter on the right. To the left will be the packaged food counters. This path will lead you to the doorway next to the boy’s washroom to the right, and the stairway leading to the XIMR building above the main canteen. Moving outward to the right, counters now appear on the right, while the volleyball court appears to the left. The first counter to the right is the dosa counter, followed by the Chinese dishes counter. Moving further, you will see the frankie counter followed by the pav bhaji counter just before the turn, leading to the juices and milkshake counter on the right. If you were to walk ahead upon reaching the pasta counter, you would find the Chai Adda counter right in front and the breakfast and lunch counter on the left. Further left would be the doorway that leads out to the water filter under the green shed.

If you were to enter the main canteen from the doorway next to the water filter under the green shed, you would find to your left the breakfast or lunch counter followed by the Chai Adda counter. Moving further inwards are the two rows of long benches and seats on the right, and the counters for packaged food items are after the Chai Adda

If you were to enter the main canteen from the doorway next to the boy’s washroom, past the stairway leading up to the XIMR building above the main canteen, you would find the counters for packaged food items on your right and the ice-cream counter to your left.
